Languages of East Timor

East Timor (and West Timor, in Indonesia) is home to a number of Austronesian and non-Austronesian languages.

In 2013 we started assembling comparative data, from existing published and unpublished sources and from original fieldwork, on the different Austronesian languages of the island.

Current members of the ANU who have been involved in language work from this area include:

  • Mark Donohue;
  • Owen Edwards;
  • Katharine Gosling;
  • Virginia Dawson.
  • Manatuto

    Language data collection from East Timor is centred in Manatuto, the most linguistically diverse district in the country. We have data from five languages:

  • Galolen;
  • Habun;
  • Idate;
  • Midiki;
  • Tetun;
  • .
